Intersections Gallery is proud to present AKAR AKAR, a solo exhibition by Singaporean multidisciplinary artist Andy Yang, from 26 to 31 August 2025. This compelling body of work explores themes of displacement, cultural memory, and the enduring search for identity through deeply textural, abstract, and figurative compositions inspired by nature and sound.

At the heart of AKAR AKAR (Malay for “”roots””) is a poignant moment from the artist’s recent visit to his Malaysian birthplace, where he witnessed the brutal severance of banyan trees during redevelopment works. The image of the uprooted tree became a powerful metaphor for a personal and collective diasporic condition: the involuntary disconnection from heritage, tradition, and place. This experience, layered with Yang’s background as a third-generation Chinese Malaysian educated in Malay and English rather than Chinese, forms the conceptual core of this series.
