A CUBE IS A CUBE IS A CUBE

Interdisciplinary artist Grace Tan has explored the evolution of geometric shapes and forms over the last two decades, bridging materiality and conceptual ideas. Under her aptly named artistic practice, ‘kwodrent’, she has used materials like paper, plastic and textile and more recently, metal, marble, and light to create transformative works.

In this exhibition, Tan takes the cube – a symbol of solidity and stability – and challenges its immutability. The 12 works examine the cube through dissecting, recomposing, and experimenting with two- and three-dimensional perspectives. She generates shapes that, while seemingly distinct, remain rooted in the cube’s essence. Tessellated components create optical illusions, altering our perception, while other pieces focus on how spatial context transforms viewing.

Tan invites us to rethink the cube’s identity: dissected, reframed, and interconnected, it reveals infinite possibilities for reinterpretation. By reimagining the cube as a medium of flux, she challenges us to rethink our own views on solidity and stability.
