Gajah Gallery is delighted to present a significant historical and cultural milestone: Latiff Mohidin: Works on Paper, a solo exhibition by internationally-acclaimed Malaysian artist Latiff Mohidin and curated by Syed Muhammad Hafiz.

Consisting of drawings produced from a variety of media, Latiff Mohidin: Works on Paper is a compelling showcase of Latiff’s commitment to the modest medium. Often lauded for his monumental paintings and sculptures, the exhibition features 20 drawings from a few of his well-known series, including the iconic Pago-Pago, Gelombang, Rimba and Voyage. Seen together for the first time in Singapore, the exhibition provides a glimpse into his thought processes spanning the 4 decades that the respective series were produced.

While ‘works on paper’ occupy a lesser place in the practice of some artists, Latiff treats drawing and sketching as integral aspects of his multi-disciplinary practice. This is evidenced by the numerous drawings produced during the abovementioned series. More than preparatory in nature, these works on paper invite us to encounter and reassess them alongside his better-known paintings.

Most prominently, the Gallery is proud to debut a new sculpture cast in bronze with a unique patina, Bird 1, produced in collaboration with Yogya Art Lab (YAL). Drawing from Latiff’s celebrated sculptural practice, this fantastic piece continues and is a testament to his enduring fascination with beauty and adventure. Where his paintings act on impulse in an immediate, expressive way, his sculptures are characterised by a sense of elegant restraint. In these carefully considered forms – abstract, fluid, modern – they collectively create a visual language that is at once silent and rhythmic.

The exhibition is scheduled to run from 28 August to 20 September 2026 at Gajah Gallery Singapore on 39 Keppel Road #03-04 Singapore 089065, in conjunction with Hari Merdeka (Independence Day) in Malaysia.
