Emergent Forms presents a new body of paintings, works on paper and works on CTP plates by Rikki Turner, exploring the unstable threshold between image, surface and material transformation. Working with staining, absorption, erasure and accumulation, Turner allows form to arise through the behaviour of pigment, water, pressure and time. Across canvas, paper and computerto-plate (CTP) plates, marks gather and disperse, sediment and bloom, suggesting bodies, membranes, weather systems, mineral deposits and cellular fields. The works occupy a space between abstraction and sensation, where the image appears less as a fixed composition than as something encountered in the process of becoming. At the centre of the exhibition is an interest in surface as a site of memory. Canvas absorbs and holds; paper carries fragility and touch; CTP plates resist, reflect and interrupt. Originally designed for mechanical reproduction, these aluminium printing surfaces extend Turner’s enquiry into trace, transfer and material resistance, introducing a tension between the organic and the manufactured, the bodily and the mechanical. Throughout the exhibition, surface becomes both skin and support, image and object. For Singapore Gallery Month, Emergent Forms is proposed as a two-site presentation. The gallery will hold the central exhibition: a concentrated installation of resolved works. A satellite presentation in the artist’s studio will offer a quieter counterpoint, opening onto the conditions of making – tests, fragments, unfinished surfaces, material experiments and the physical space from which the work emerges. Together, the gallery and studio create a movement between the formed and the forming. The project invites viewers to encounter painting not as a static image, but as an event of material transformation: a surface through which memory, atmosphere and embodied experience slowly come into view.
