Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery Singapore is delighted to announce its second exhibition: Ziad Dalloul: Only light has no shadow, marking the Syrian-born, Paris-based artist’s debut exhibition in Singapore, as part of the vOilah! France Singapore Festival presented by the Embassy of France in Singapore.
Bringing together 16 paintings from the past five years, selected engravings, archival materials, and a comprehensive new monograph tracing his practice from 1970 to the present, this exhibition offers the most complete survey of Dalloul’s work ever presented in Southeast Asia.
Ziad Dalloul was born in 1953 in Sweida, southern Syria, where volcanic basalt landscapes forged his early, enduring bond with the natural world. His path led him from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University, where he mastered engraving alongside painting, to the vast horizons of the Algerian Sahara, before settling in Paris in 1984 to study at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. Dalloul is a rare practitioner who masterfully unifies traditionally separate disciplines of engraving and painting, that critic Jean-Claude Le Gouic noted that he “paints as an engraver and engraves as a painter”. This methodology establishes depth
through “optical vibrations” and the varying density of colour.
Only light has no shadow invites audiences to enter this floating world for the first time. In a world of fleeting certainties, Ziad Dalloul reminds us that we see most clearly when we stand at the edge, where light meets shadow, where certainty gives way to question, where wonder replaces conclusion.
