Artist Profile

Chuu Wai is part of a new generation of women artists reshaping Myanmar’s art scene — loud, unapologetic, and powerful.
Born in 1992 in Loikaw (Kayah State), Chuu uses painting, performance, and installation to explore gender, identity, and censorship. Her works, often featuring text, self-portraiture, and vivid color, speak out against taboos and restrictions placed on women’s bodies and voices.
A graduate of the National University of Arts and Culture in Yangon, Chuu’s work has been exhibited in Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore, and France.
Through her art, she asks: Who defines femininity? Who controls freedom of expression?
