From Landscape to Abstraction: The Visual Language of Than Htay
Held in conjunction with Than Htay’s solo exhibition “Untitled: Memory and the Reimagining of Homeland”. An event of Singapore Gallery Month.
What happens when a landscape becomes an abstraction? When colour becomes the subject rather than a description of nature? And when a painting that looks spontaneous reveals a carefully constructed visual language?
This talk offers a close visual reading of the paintings of Myanmar artist Than Htay (b. 1958, Yangon), examining how he moves between lyrical landscapes, fragmented imagery, geometric abstraction and gestural painting. Through a selection of works, we will look at his use of colour, composition, texture, gesture and spatial structure—and consider what connects works that, at first glance, appear radically different.
Rather than tracing a chronological biography, the talk asks a more fundamental question: what makes a Than Htay painting recognisable? The answer may lie not in a particular subject or technique, but in his persistent exploration of colour as a means of transforming landscape, memory and visual experience.
