Than Htay is one of Myanmar’s most celebrated contemporary artists, renowned for his vibrant use of color, expressive compositions, and innovative painting techniques. A self-taught artist, he began painting at an early age and developed a distinctive artistic style that combines imagination, emotion, and technical experimentation.
Following the events of 1988, Than Htay lived and worked in Japan for many years, where his talent gained international recognition. During this period, he received several prestigious honors, including the Fuji TV Award and a Mayor’s Award in Japanese art competitions. In 2013, he was awarded Best Painting by the Tun Foundation Bank Art Awards in Myanmar, further establishing his reputation as one of the country’s leading contemporary painters.
Over the course of his career, Than Htay has explored a wide range of subjects, from luminous landscapes and figurative works to abstract and historically inspired series. His paintings have been exhibited extensively in Myanmar and internationally, including in Japan, China, Korea, Singapore, France, and the United States.
A member of the Artist Friendship Association of Asia in Japan, Than Htay continues to create works distinguished by their energy, rich textures, and powerful visual storytelling. His enduring contribution to contemporary Myanmar art has earned him recognition both at home and abroad.
